San Lui Mo
Emigrazione da Buscate (Mi) tra ’800 e ’900
A project sponsored by Associazione 5 agosto 1991 under the padronage of Comune di Buscate
The migration phenomenon from Buscate (small town in the province of Milan) which has had serious social impacts, has not yet been really studied and, most important to underline, is not really part of the collective memory: it is just part of indiviadual thoughts. Thanks to the initial collected data, we can assume that the most significant period of this real mass exodus is the one between 1880 and 1920 with several destinations overseas (Americas and China) and some locations inside European Countries.
We are talking about a topic born out of necessity, either seasonal or permanent: reason why was the strong need to satisfy primary family needs.

The “San Lui Mo” takes its name from the label often tapped on the caps of the emigrants in St. Louis, Missouri, needed to identify themselves upon arrival at Ellis Island: almost all of them could not read, write, speak or understand English.
